The Herman Trend Alert July 22, 1998: The New Frontier of Employee Benefits—Doggie Daycare First, there was childcare; then there was eldercare; now there’s petcare. Pet daycare centers in major markets are thriving, notably New York and San Francisco. The pet owners are delighted with the service they and their pets receive. Most of the facilities have waiting lists. Employers currently offer on-site childcare and eldercare. We believe that the next step is pet daycare. Through a company called BeneCom, a number of employers already offer Pet Assist, group discounts for routine and medical petcare. Other companies are very liberal about allowing employees to bring their pets to work. A lot of attention has been paid lately to helping employees with children balance their lives between work and family. But what about those employees who don’t have children? They represent about two-third of the workforce and they want, even sometimes demand, equal treatment. To childless employees, their pets are their children.
