Retention Strategy: Yes or No?

An estimated 75 percent of American employers do not have a dedicated employee retention function. This ignore-the-problem policy is increasingly risky. Companies with higher rates of turnover and surveys indicating lower levels of employee satisfaction are reversing their maybe-it-will-go-away practices.

More human resource departments are creating Employee Retention Specialist positions and seeking methods to train and support these professionals in their work. Mark Livingston, SPHR, Vice President for Training and Certification at The Herman Group in Greensboro, NC, is seeing more interest from employers. "We've responded by scheduling Employee Retention Specialist Training programs on a more frequent basis," he reports. "Calls are coming from corporate human resource professionals in many industries, as well as from consultants."

"Strategies for building a stable, productive workforce must start at the top of the organization," advised retention expert Roger Herman. Author of Keeping Good People, Herman encourages companies to look at retention as a management practice, "not something else to dump on the Human Resources department. HR people can help, but retention is really a management issue."

National Seminars Group, Shawnee Mission, Kansas, a division of Rockhurst University, recently announced a new program: Roger Herman's Employee Retention Boot Camp. Rocky White, Vice President for In-House Training, said "Interest is high, confirming that employers are already experiencing problems that must be solved. We can help them by training supervisors and managers. That's our focus," he explained.

Herman, the recognized thought leader in the field, is a sought-after speaker and consultant on workforce trends and retention. His schedule is getting busy again, after a slow-down over the past few years. While some organizations are slow to make commitments to bring in outside help, the volume of inquiries to his firm has increased significantly since the first of the year.

"There's no question that this is a rapidly emerging issue," observed Livingston. "Employee retention strategy is grabbing a lot more attention in executive suites and boardrooms, and we're just on the leading edge of this challenge."
