The Herman Trend Alert
September 18, 2013 Creating Global Peace Few things are as important as creating peace in the world. War destroys lives, dislocates families, and generally disrupts society. Lately, we have also seen the rise of groups dedicated to combining commerce and peace, including the organization called "Conscious Capitalism", having a CEO Summit this fall. (http://www.consciouscapitalism.org/). Against this backdrop, the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), non-profit in New York, Sydney, and Oxford, has recently released a landmark research report. Titled "The Pillars of Peace", the study offers a new conceptual framework for understanding and describing the factors that create peaceful societies. This framework isolates the positive factors and defines the national characteristics, which sustain and reinforce peaceful societies. The report details the attitudes, institutions, and structures associated with peace that are also associated with many other desirable aspects, including a strong business environment, gender equality, and high levels of human capital; the "Pillars of Peace" describes "the optimal environment for human potential to flourish". "Negative peace", "the absence of violence or fear of violence", is used to create the Global Peace Index (GPI), while "positive peace" is "the attitudes, institutions, and structures that. . .lead to a more peaceful society". IEP has also developed its Positive Peace Index (PPI), which ranks nations according to how well developed their attitudes, institutions, and structures are for "sustaining peace, creating resilience, and developing human potential". This study provides an excellent benchmark against which to assess the performance of the broader aspects of social development and a countryÕs overall resilience when confronted with social upheaval. IEP analyzed over 900 different indices, datasets and attitudinal surveys to determine the eight Pillars that drive peace: 1) A well-functioning government; 2) A sound business environment; 3) An equitable distribution of resources; 4) An acceptance of the rights of others; 5) Good relations with neighbors; 6) Free flow of information; 7) A high level of human capital; and 8) Low levels of corruption. IEP has helped civilization to take the first scientific step towards supporting nations in creating peace within their borders. We can only hope that building on enlightened self-interest some foundations and corporations will take up the torch and work with floundering nations to strengthen the Pillars of Peace.
