Whither Quality of Life?

We’re hearing that the majority of recent college grads are looking for more than money in the first job in the real world. Yes, money is still important, but quality of life and meaningfulness are racing to the top of the criteria heap.

Large companies are not viewed by those approaching graduation as being havens of warmth and supportiveness. That’s the competitive, dog-eat-dog part of the employment landscape. If you want more meaningfulness and a better quality of life, they believe, seek out the small and medium-sized companies. In those organizations, people still care about each other and there’s more sensitivity to the individual contributor.

A recent survey by Kennedy Information Research Group revealed that none of the Big Six consulting firms ranked in the top ten in the Quality of Life category in its MBA Recruiting Trends report. Major firms, other than Deloitte & Touche, did rank not in the top ten in the categories of Long-Term Opportunities, Prestige and Reputation, and Compensation. The smaller firms were ranked highest in Quality of Life. Smaller firms included Hewitt Associates, Boston Consulting Group, Towers Perrin, and IBM Consulting Group.

We suspect this survey could be replicated, with similar results, in a great number of professions and executive job categories. Most industry leaders, regardless of category, have not yet realized the awesome power of caring for the human side of enterprise.
