The Next Generation

100 Days until January 1, 2001

Young people, still in school, will have a dramatic impact on our world. They are learning more, learning faster, and are driven to high achievement. In our speeches, we often talk about our 13-year old daughter, Samantha, comparing her view of the world and her interests with her siblings in their twenties. As we learn about others in her generation, we are fascinated by how quickly they are growing up in our fast-moving and shrinking world. Samantha has "pen pals" and "game buddies" in other countries, with communication beyond the level that excited us with similar relationships with friends from other states when we were her age. Global boundaries will mean very little to the Millennial Generation.

Even with our attention to this generation, we were startled and delighted to receive the following e-mail recently (edited for brevity).

"I am a senior at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. I have been getting your Trend Alerts for about a year now, and I really enjoy reading all of them. My favorite ones, because they are very relevant in my life, deal with students and/or women in the workforce. I have also read your book 'Signs of the Times.' Keep up the good work! Also, it has been a while, but last summer you had a serious problem with your Palm Pilot. You called the 3Com help line and spoke to a service representative who fixed your problem. Well, you spoke to a woman for about half an hour, and this person was me. Last summer, I was 15, and had a job as a systems engineer for 3Com, the maker of Palm Pilot. Now, I have an internship at NASA where I am doing research and computer programming. As a loyal reader of the Trend Alerts, I think it would be interesting for you to discuss the introduction of younger and younger people into the work force (you can use my story). Many people don't realize what responsible, dedicated, and smart workers teenagers, not just college students, can be."

Well said, Elizabeth. No further commentary from us is needed.

Comments from our readers:

As an educator, working with K-12 children and teachers as the CAREER Connection Coordinator, and as a teacher-coordinator of 24 High School senior interns working in such diverse fields as corporate day care to research and development, I am very concerned about what author David Elkind describes in his book, The Hurried Child. What is developmentally appropriate for our children - whether they are 2 years old or whether it is Elizabeth who is 15 years old? How should our children be spending their time, and with whom?

Kids aren't just getting jobs at a younger age! They are starting their own businesses. Check out www.YoungBiz.com.

I work for KidsWay Inc., the parent company of YoungBiz magazine and YoungBiz.com. I enjoyed your email and found it insightful. b.elli
